3-Step Guide To Replacing Your Partially Broken Car's Door Mirror

Reginald Richardson

If your car's door mirror is partially broken, you may decide to try to replace it yourself. If so, use the three steps below to help guide yourself through the process. For these steps, you will need a pre-cut mirror designed for your car and a tube of rubber sealant, both of which you can find or order through an auto parts store.

Step 1:  Remove Any Loose Pieces Of Broken Glass

Before you install the new mirror, you will need to remove any loose pieces of broken glass from inside the base. To do this, wear a pair of heavy gloves to keep from cutting yourself, as well as safety goggles to protect your eyes from stray shards of glass.

When removing the glass, do not worry about any glass that is still firmly attached. The replacement mirror will go right over this. Breaking these pieces off increases your chances of cracking the base, as well as causing stray pieces of glass to start flying.

Step 2:  Apply Rubber Sealant To The Mirror Base

After removing the loose glass, the next step is to apply the rubber sealant to the mirror base. Although the pre-cut mirror has strips of adhesive on the back, this may not be strong enough to withstand wind pressure and moisture over long periods of time.

On the mirror base and the remaining pieces of glass, apply a thick bead along the outer edge. Then, remove the backing on the adhesive strips of the new mirror and run a bead of sealant along the lines. Once this is done, go on to the next step.

Step 3:  Affix The New Mirror To The Base

After applying the rubber sealant, affix the mirror to the base using firm, even pressure. Use the palms of your hands to do this. Hold the pressure for a couple of minutes while gently rubbing on the rubber to spread the sealant underneath.

Let go of the mirror and use masking tape to temporarily hold it in place until the sealant sets up according to the package instructions. Masking tape will stay in place but does not leave a thick, sticky residue on the glass when it is removed.

Once the rubber sealant sets up, your new mirror should be able to withstand the constant wind and pressure of driving. If you have any further questions about replacing your door mirror, you may want to speak with the sales representative at the auto parts store from which you ordered it, such as OEM Used Auto Parts.
