When Is It Time To Replace Your Car's Battery?

Reginald Richardson

One part of your vehicle that needs to be replaced from time to time is the battery. Batteries do not last forever, as they tend to wear down over time. Here are some signs that it's time to replace your old car battery with a new one.

The Battery Light

A clear indicator that your battery has a problem is if the service battery dashboard light is on. Make sure to check your owner's manual to determine why this light may be on, and take your car to an auto shop to read the service code to make sure what it is. There could be a clear indication that something is wrong and the battery needs to be replaced.

The Age

It is always worth checking what the manufacturer's recommended lifespan is for the battery that you have. Each manufacturer is going to say something different, so it is hard to generalize it by saying it could be a certain amount of years. Of course, there are other factors that can decrease the lifespan. Use the manufacturer's recommendation as guidance to judge when it will be time to change the battery.

The Shape

You can actually tell if it is time to replace a battery based on the shape of the battery. Take a look at it and make sure that the battery is a normal size. If it looks like the battery is bloating and busting out of the casing that it rests in, know that the battery is in bad shape and needs to be exchanged with a new one.

The Startup Problems

Do you notice that your vehicle has problems when you go to start up the vehicle? A car requires a battery to provide power for the startup process, and a battery that is failing is going to cause problems. You may notice that the engine cranks slower than it used to because the vehicle is not getting sufficient power.

The Dim Lights

Are the lights a bit dimmer compared to how they typically are when you open the door to your vehicle? A battery that is struggling to hold a charge may show itself by having dim interior lights when the vehicle is not yet started. Once the engine is on, the lights will then be at full power because the engine is helping to recharge the battery and give your vehicle the power it needs.
