4 Things To Do Before Selling Your Unwanted Car

Reginald Richardson

When you sell an unwanted car for scrap or parts, you don't need to worry too much about the condition of the car because it won't be driven. Thus, you don't need to wash your car and make it look perfectly shiny. There still are, however, four things you should do before you officially sell your junk car.

1. Remove the License Plates and Registration Sticker

Anytime someone else buys your vehicle, you need to remove the license plates and registration sticker before they take possession of your car.

Both are linked specifically to you, so they shouldn't remain on the car once someone else owns it. Additionally, you may need to surrender the license plates to your local department of motor vehicles to prove that you are no longer driving the car.

Both the license plates and registration sticker can be easily removed in a few minutes. To get the license plates off, use a screwdriver to take out the bolts that hold the plates in. For the registration sticker, scrub hard with some warm, soapy water, and the glue should loosen.

2. Check for Loose Change in the Cabin

Go through the cabin, including the seat cushions, cup holders, center console, and floor, to see whether there's any loose change in it. Many people have a surprising amount of spare change in their car, and this is money that you're giving away if you leave it in the car when you sell it.

Even if the loose change in your car amounts to only a few dollars, that's still a few extra dollars that you otherwise would lose.

3. Take Out Personal Items

One last time before you hand over the keys to the car, go through it again and make sure all of your personal possessions have been removed. From spare coffee cups and old kids' toys, to road trip mementos and favorite books, there could still be a belonging in the car that you want to keep.

During this step, check the trunk, under the seats, center console, and glove box. Sometimes, people put things in out-of-view places and then forget about them.

4. Don't Fill Up the Gas Tank

If you're selling an unwanted car for scrap or parts, there's little reason to keep a lot of gas in the tank. Don't bother filling the gas tank as it depletes unless you need to drive the car more before the actual sale day.
