What To Do When Your Auto AC Breaks Down

Reginald Richardson

There is nothing more frustrating than having your auto air conditioner break down in the middle of the summer. The days you spent planning to go on road trips with your friends and family will be all in vain. Ideally, you want to be able to inspect your auto AC early and make sure it's properly running before you go on an extended excursion. Some of the issues that you might want to pay attention to include strange rattling noises whenever the AC is turned on, continuous warm air coming from your AC vents or even unpleasant smell. These signs will tell you that you need auto AC repair immediately. An expert auto repair shop will help you identify and fix the problem before it gets any worse.

Here are some of the checks that auto technicians perform to fix the air conditioner problem of your car:

Check if the cooling fans on the radiator are running

Auto technicians start by checking if the cooling fans are working. If the air coming out of the AC is warm even when you turned it on high, it means that there is an issue with air flow. At this point, the technician will check if the cooling fans on the radiator are running smoothly. If not, the technician will recommend replacing the air filter to fix the electrical issue and increase air flow.

Check if the AC compressor is running

If replacing the air filter does not fix the problem, the technician needs to inspect if the AC compressor is running. The clutch located near the air conditioner pulley in the engine bay should interlock otherwise the compressor could be broken and will need replacement to fix. This technical problem requires specialized tools that auto AC repair shop should have.

Refilling the AC compressor with refrigerant is a suitable fix to the problem. This involves attaching the charging hose of the auto air refrigerant to the low side service port of the air conditioning system and turning the valve on the top of the refrigerant until it starts to release refrigerant into the car's AC system.

Check if there are leaks in the air conditioning system

Even with air refrigerant, your AC can still encounter problems of uneven air flow it there is leaks in the air conditioning system. Auto AC repair shops use leak detection kits including dyes to easily identify cracks in the system. The technician must fix these cracks to ensure that the AC compressor works and cool air flow consistently.
